The game has been developed using Microsoft XNA, a cross platform C# framework which can cross-compile from a single codebase with support for Xbox 360, Windows PC and Windows Phone 7. When designing this game we wanted to ensure we created a game that would have eye catching graphics and also run at a decent framerate on Windows Phone hardware.Retroburn say that they have their own in-house deferred rendering engine written in XNA/C# which will also be used for other (future) games but for Positron they decided to write a new renderer from scratch with a much simpler pipeline which would look as good on the phone as it does on Xbox 360 and PC. This meant simplifying the entire rendering process, they effectively render with no lighting and no shadows. It is also noticeable that influences from both Tron and Tron Legacy have helped design the game’s visual style since those movies are the inspiration behind Positron.

While there have also been a large number of lightcycle games developed for every platform imaginable in the past, with Positron the aim was to design a new experience. It should also feel familiar but offer new and interesting challenges and game modes to challenge the player. One of the first design decisions that was made was to stay away from the boring open arena gameplay. While that is still included as a mode in the game, there is also have much more complex layouts and even include a level editor so the player can design their own levels which are dynamically built from a simple 2D pixel-map (a video of the editor in action will be posted this week).

Retroburn also said that the visual style of the blocks in the game world was designed to be simple, cover a large portion of the screen and use as few polygons to render as possible. We also wanted to show reflections of the world geometry, bikes and trails too. In early builds we would render two copies of everything, one translated beneath the ground plane and one above providing realistic looking reflections. As development continued we wanted to optimize this as much as possible and we now use a number of tricks to render the world in a much more efficient manner which even the Windows Phone 7 devices can handle with full reflections.

The bikes themselves have been designed to look fast, with minimal texturing. The game will launch with three bikes included and we intend to add more content as time progresses. The trail effect is relatively simple, nothing too special there but we did add in a few particle effects for sparks under the bike’s wheels while driving. This made the bikes feel grounded and provided a consistent visual effect to help make the scene more lively.

The chase camera went through quite a number of iterations before we reached the current version. During testing we accidentally changed some settings of the camera and thought it looked cool when turning that we got a side-shot of the bike. We kept this in the current camera with an elastic snap-back to the bike’s tail. This gives a unique cornering animation which looks cool as you go swerving around the corners on the map.

Overall we’re now very happy with the way Positron looks and feels. While this video was only intended as a VFX Preview there is so much more to the game than you’re seeing here and we will be showing that in a few upcoming gameplay videos later this week. We hope you like the video and please do comment or leave feedback.

On February 8, 2012, “PlayStation®Network accounts” will be renamed “Sony Entertainment Network accounts” or “SEN accounts”. This change will take effect at the same time as upcoming PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita* system software updates. After you update the system software on your PS3 or PS Vita , you will notice that “PlayStation Network accounts” have been renamed “Sony Entertainment Network accounts”. This change will not affect the naming of “PlayStation Network accounts” when viewed on a PSP (PlayStation Portable) system. *PlayStation Vita will launch from 22nd February, 2012.

This account change is a change in name only. Which means that you do not have to do anything and your username and password will not change.

This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network”. This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.

Your Sony Entertainment Network account also enables use of Sony’s non-game services such as Music Unlimited, Video Store of PlayStation®Store and PlayMemories Online (previously called Personal Space) across a variety of network-connected devices.

For FAQs and more detail on this change please visit http://eu.playstation.com/support orhttp://en.support.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/

I don’t make a habit of telling people what to do, I leave that to Dictators. However I ask that YOU DO NOT delete your Mass Effect save…why? read on and maybe you can guess.

One thing I don’t do is post rumours, however when info hails from someone actually involved with a game franchise hails interesting news, it’s not a rumour….so lets continue
When Mass Effect 2 was released you had the option to import your character from Mass Effect, I believe there was some other bonuses too but can’t remember – my brain has gone all 8-bit recently. Anyway, Mass Effect executive producer, Mike Gamble has told a few people NOT to delete their game saves. Mr Gamble is being very tight lipped about why he came out and said this. It has been said a few months back that Bioware is not done with Mass Effect. They may be done with Commander Shepard but Mass Effect as a series is not finished.

So how do we know Mass Effect ain’t finished?
Well this quote from a recent Gamerzine article with Mike Gamble suggests that Mass Effect is far from over:

“It wouldn’t be a bad idea (to keep your ME3 saves),”“Obviously I can’t say anything, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea…”

Then there is the quote at the end of the recent trailer released for Mass Effect where Martin Sheen/The illusive man says:

“Stay Tuned. I aint done yet”

<a target="_blank" href="http://ghoststorm.co.uk/mass-effect-3-voice-cast-reveal-trailer/"title="Mass Effect 3 Voice Cast Reveal Trailer" >Here is the full trailer or you can click >http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Hfvo5ueKJY8#t=216s and see for yourself.

As you know DICE have stepped up their fight against cheaters in Battlefield 3 and to back this up even more there has been a job posted on the EA Jobs website for an Anti Cheat Administrator. Is this enough though? Well when you take a look at what the Anti Cheat Administrator has to do it definitely is a start but I believe it is a lot for just the one person.

Main responsibilities:

•	Analyze player behavior data and process reports from the public.
•	Work with account restrictions
•	Monitor and keep up to date with the cheating community online.
•	Actively share status reports with key stake holders
•	Be active with our community and monitor game play status
•	Take ownership of the cause and promote fair play both internally and externally

With ingame recording features such as other similar titles and a way to submit the videos to YouTube would’ve been a great little extra bit of help to DICE/EA but they didn’t put anything like that into place. Even screenshot features would be a great addition.

You can view the job here: https://jobs.ea.com/search/view.do?id=a0z50000001DsZhAAK

Guinness World Record Gamer's Edition: The most players taking part in a single online battle in a first-person shooter is 999, achieved by Man vs. Machine (MuchDifferent, 2012) on 29 January 2012.

MuchDifferent made a new world record with their game Man vs Machine last sunday as 999 players battled lag-free in the biggest first person shooter ever made. Today Guinness World Records made it official.

Man vs. Machine was developed in Unity, and was an in-browser battle between two teams. Men were the strongest and had the upper hand for most of the game, and it was not until the very end that Machines were able to fight back and finally took complete control over the battlefield.

MuchDifferent, who provided both the game and the new server technology, was at first overwhelmed by the huge number of people trying to join this one-time event. CEO, Christian Lönnholm explains:

“It was amazing. We did not imagine the amount of interest that this game would generate, so the system went down shortly after we had reached the peak of 999 players. Within minutes we were able to adjust it, and the battle continued for about two hours more. Almost until the end we were averaging around 980 players at any given moment. It was a blast!”

“Obviously, this would not have been possible without the players, so I’d like to send a special warm and loving ‘thank you’ to them! Thank you for bringing such creativity to both the battlefield and to the chat. You had me laughing, giggling and spilling coffee throughout the event!”

Apart from the fun and excitement of it all, the event proved that PikkoServer, the server and network technology used to make all of this possible, can take the strain and deliver an entirely new multiplayer experience. “We believe this technology can be applied to just about any game engine used today. So, our goal now is to make this technology available to developers worldwide. Stay tuned!”

Derek Wise, entrusted with being the external expert observer for the event, wrote earlier today in his report to the Guinness World Records, Gamers Edition:

“…this test met the requirements for being a first person online shooter, it exceeds the requirements and is a good example of the spirit of the world record and the competition that should generate in the industry and technology.”

You can check out this record breaking game here: http://www.muchdifferent.com/1000PlayerFPS/
