Sony Games $889m Loss

Its never good to lose something, whether it be your beloved budgie by leaving the back door open or even your car keys only to find them at the bottom of your kids toybox. But, to lose $889m doesn’t even compare to keys and a budgie. Sony Games division have reported that massive loss stating that sales in its Network Product and Services division, which includes the PlayStation business, were down 10.2 per cent for the full fiscal year ended March 2010, due to a decrease in PlayStation 2 and PSP sales.

However, due to the launch of the slim PS3 the sales of PlayStation 3 hardware were up during the year from 10.3 million units to 13 million. Also, sales of PlayStation 3 software increased to 115.3 million units during the year, up from 103.7 million the previous year.

PSP sales were down from 14.1 million to 9.9 million, while 7.3 million PlayStation 2 units were sold in 2010, compared to 7.9 million the previous year.

The division recorded an operating loss of ¥83.1 billion ($889.1m / £597.3m), down ¥4.4 billion compared to last year. While PSP and PS3 hardware sales were down, this was offset by cost reductions on the PS3 hardware, increased software sales and improved profitability from Walkman digital music players.

PSP titles were down to 44.4 million units, compared to 50.3 million last year, and PS2 game sales down to 35.7 million units, compared to 83.5 million.

Sony have said that they expect the software sales across all formats to remain the same in the next financial year ended 2011, despite an expected increase in PlayStation 3 sales.

Sales for the division were ¥1,578.8 billion ($16.8bn / £11.3bn) during the full year, but despite the performance of the Network Product and Services division, results for the entire group were much more positive.

Sony Corporation recorded an operating income of ¥31.8 billion ($339.7m / £228.1m) in 2010, compared to a loss of ¥227.8 billion the prior year, with the Financial Services division and sales of LCD TVs in Consumer Products & Services as highlights.

For the full year ended March 2011, Sony expects an operating income of ¥160 billion, with an improvement in operating loss of the Network Product and Services division due to better game sales and VAIO PC sales.

REPOSTED: Episodes from Liberty City PS3 Review

Grand Theft Auto Episodes from Liberty City

Playstation 3 Review by Steve Quinn

Lets start by saying as most other have said this game is a must for anyone who has played GTAIV or who wants just a little taste of what GTAIV is all about. The game is full of bullet holes and insults that you’ll grow to love.

Also players of the PC version maybe pleased to know that someone is working on a mod titled ‘Episodes from Liberty City Beta’ – but that’s not to be talked about here, you can however get all the latest info on that in the dedicated GTA forum here.

So I opened the case and placed the disk to the front of the Playstation thinking what this game was going to be like and hoping that it would be as fantastic as GTAIV originally was when that was released. It is and more. The game starts off quiet – well until you select which title you want to play, Lost & Damned (L&D) or The Ballad of Gay Tony (TboGT).

Obviously Lost & Damned was the first choice and after a short but great intro which introduces you to the guys your going to be going through the missions and earning trophies with, the game starts, you will also meet some folks from the original GTAIV as you progress through both of the episodes and will see how the 3 stories come together to form just one big story. From what I could see the map had not changed at all but you will think it has, the main reason is that you will visit more of the map than you did before, I discovered a lot more areas via Lost & Damned that I really did think that the game had been improved. On GTAIV when I play that using one of the mods I never venture out of the middle of each islands much but this game had me visiting more or less all the areas you may have missed out. The same goes for TBoGT, you will see GTAIV in a completely different light and the fact that you do not need the original GTAIV to run these episodes is a bonus. I also suggest you get the ‘disc’ version as the download one is not really the same, you don’t get all the radio stations for example.

Other than the missions in the 2 episodes there is slight hints that refer to the missions we originally did in GTAIV but as I have a personal rule against spoilers I refuse to say who you will meet and what you will do with them and of what missions come together from the original title.

Rockstar definitely did a brilliant job with these episodes and I wish that they would do more with GTAIV like these little episodes as fans like me would really appreciate it. Maybe one on how Niko’s life is going on now that the game has finished etc..

In both games you will notice that there is huge amount of brand new weapons and a lot more including the vehicles listed below:

Cars

Gang Burrito

Prison Bus

Rhapsody

Regina

Slamvan

Tow Truck

Buffalo- A civilian version of the FIB Buffalo.

Bullet GT

Super Diamond- inaccessible on multi player

Super Drop Diamond- inaccessible on Multi player

Tampa- inaccessible on multi player

Bikes

Angel

Bati 800

Daemon

Diabolus

Double T

Double T Custom

Hakuchou

Hakuchou Custom

Hexer

Innovation

Lycan

Nightblade

Revenant

Wayfarer

Wolfsbane

Akuma

Vader

Helicopters

Buzzard

Swift- A helicopter designed to carry people, inaccessible on multi player

Skylift- inaccessible on multi player

Boats

Blade

Floater

Smuggler

Law Enforcement

Police Bike- Only vehicle in the game with a 1-person carrying capacity (excluding forklifts)

Police Stinger- Fastest vehicle in the game; a Presidente with greatly increased speed and police livery

Police Buffalo

APC

Others

Golf Cart

So even after the main games have finished there is still plenty of fun to be had looking for these new vehicles. The multi player is still pretty much bullet packed too – I had some good few hours flying around liberty and not all the modes are competitive, if like me you just want to cruise around Algonquin or Broker without having to look your shoulder for rockets etc. then you can – there is a free roam type of mode which is brilliant. Plus its a great way to have fun with your friends without the risk of being forced into a death match.

Its hard for me to score this game as I only usually go up to 10 and it deserves a lot higher score so if you rate games then you need to add at least another 0 to it it definitely deserves a 100+/100 because the game is just so much more fun to play. I really do believe that you should get this game if you have played through GTAIV or even if you haven’t you could perhaps see it as a teaser of what GTAIV is all about?

The missions in my opinion were well written and kept very much to the original storyline without dipping into it too much.

You will really enjoy playing as Johnny Klebitz in L&D and Luis Lopez in TBoGT its hard to get the game out the PS3 now!!

“Johnny is a very different character than Niko, with a very different background,” says Dan Houser, vice president of creative development for Rockstar Games. “I can’t go into too much detail on the story, because we try not to give away too much plot before the game is released. But I can say that the story will show you a different side of Liberty City.”

“The story is not directly impacted by decisions you took in the main game,” he says. However, “tons of details and mysteries from the main story get explained, so it will add a lot of colour to the main story.”

The game even has the voice of Omid Djalili – I bet you cant guess which one, and no its not Tony.

Thats all from me but if you wish to ask any questions then please do and if not then go get the game already!!!!

You still here?
