Some of our Troops are so used to playing commercial games they tend to lose concentration unless MoD simulations look equally realistic. This has become an important issue at the MoD, who are turning more to digital simulations to help prepare soldiers for duty.

Thousands of troops sent to Afghanistan have been trained on Virtual Battlespace2, a spin-off from a commercial game that can, for example, test their responses when they come under mortar attack from insurgents.

Though the military stresses that these games only supplement traditional methods, it reflects the way technology is transforming military training. With budgets being squeezed across the MoD, simulations are also a comparatively cheap way of giving troops a “virtual” taste of what they might come up against in a warzone.

Another idea involves issuing RAF trainee pilots with tablet computers such as iPads, to save the cost – and weight – of printing bulky flight manuals that need to be regularly updated and cost £1,000 a student.

The scientists and engineers at MoD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory in Portsdown, Hampshire, are at the heart of the developments. Andrew Poulter, the technical team leader, said the military was trying to keep up with the advances that have helped turned computer gaming into a hugely lucrative global industry. Bestsellers such as Battlefield 3, Killzone 3 and the Call of Duty series have taken this genre of video games, known as “first-person shooters”, to a new level.

“Back in the 1980s and 1990s, defence was far out in front in terms of quality of simulation,” said Poulter. “Military-built simulators were state of the art. But now, for £50, you can buy a commercial game that will be far more realistic than the sorts of tools we were using. The truth is, the total spending on games development across the industry will be greater than spending on defence.”

Poulter is in charge of Project Kite (knowledge information test environment), which has been tasked with putting the MoD back in the forefront of simulation training, in part by buying-in technology from the big gaming companies.

The key to successful virtual training is for the simulation to be realistic enough for people to be properly “immersed” in what they are doing.

“Certainly, there is a level of computer games experience in recruits. So the plots have to be realistic and the image generation has to be high quality. A lot of the older systems can be very clunky. If you put someone behind a block display, it is harder for them to be completely immersed.” But though the commercial games “may look graphically beautiful, they have to be entertaining rather than realistic”.

Poulter and his nine-strong team will adapt the software so that the weapons perform as they would in combat “The weapons need to be credible. If they fire a rifle and the bullet travels three and a half miles, then that is not right. If they are steering a vehicle, then that has to be right too. Realism is more important than entertainment. Levels of immersion are very important.”

The MoD is using a variety of simulations, from drills to put out a fire in an aircraft to what to do if a vehicle in a convoy gets hit by a roadside bomb.

There are specific Afghanistan simulations, designed to give troops an idea of the tough environment they will find in one of the small forward operating bases in Helmand, and the drills they need to use if they come under attack.

Putting training simulations on tablet computers could be the next big shift in training. It would allow sailors, soldiers and aircrews to practise techniques wherever they wanted to. “Virtual Battlespace is quite good fun, and we want trainees to want to do training,” said Poulter.

“It is certainly a lot more fun than going through lists of checks and box-ticking.

“We want them to think ‘I would quite like to do a bit more of that kind of thing’. So they might spend 10 minutes [on a simulation] after reading papers in the morning, or in their spare time.”

Cost has also become a pressing issue. “If they have already learned some core skills in a simulation, there is less to learn during live training, which is much more expensive and may involve aircraft, tanks, and live round explosions.”

Poulter said a commander who came back from Afghanistan told him that two soldiers in his unit had drilled themselves so much on Virtual Battlespace2, he was sure the training had saved their lives when they came under fire. “It has been invaluable. It is being taken seriously. It’s not just a game,” said Poulter.

It’s wise not to attempt this alone, so make sure you have a full team i.e. 5 players this will give you a fighting chance especially considering you are not only against the enemy but also the time is ticking away.

Map selection is crucial, I personally like Trenches but Checkout is also a good strategic choice.

To begin with most players should choose the explosive ticker this helps store up the cash for bringing in the big beasts later, try having someone playing as a wild ticker or wretch, the wild ticker can take down the fortifications to allow the explosive tickers through and the wretch is useful for jumping over spikes or getting that quick final kill as time runs low.

Once you pass level 5 the Savage Drone is a good choice, he starts off with a Retro Lancer  so is good for charging the enemy also have whoever has reached tier 2 beasts play as the Kantus (only 1 person needs to do this) they can then heal the other team members.

Beast Mode Tiers

Hopefully by the time you reach wave 12 you will have saved up a fair amount of cash as you will need to purchase the tier 4 beasts. Wave 12 is basically Onyx Guards who can only be executed a close range and Heroes.  1 or 2 players should use a Berserker to knock down & destroy as many of the fortifications as possible and hopefully a lot of the enemies too. The other players would be best using Savage Drones & Explosive Tickers.

“The problem is we don’t want people to experience the game through a crappy YouTube video with a 320×200 resolution, or something like that,” Troedsson told VideoGamer.com. “We want people to see this game in the great HD way that we want people to see it, of course.”

“I’d follow that up by saying that they don’t have to worry. The game is going to look really, really good on 360 as well, and we want to show them that now and up until launch.”

Addressing those who have already seen the footage, Troedsson added: “I would ask them a question, and that is, ‘How can you even make that judgement by looking at the quality of those videos?’ – which I’ve seen, by the way.

“I’d follow that up by saying that they don’t have to worry. The game is going to look really, really good on 360 as well, and we want to show them that now and up until launch.”

Troedsson also responded to concerns about the lack of Xbox 360 footage for the game thus far.

“I mean, we have to select which platforms we’re going to show it on, and there might be a lot of reasons behind it, but I don’t think people should worry about the 360,” he explained. “We do have the beta coming out very shortly now, we haven’t got the final date but it will be coming out in September, then people can play it themselves on 360 and hopefully can see that it looks and plays really well on 360.”

Good news for Xbox 360 gamers then, but we’ll hold out until we see the Xbox 360 version before getting too carried away.

Xbox today revealed the final member and lucky team captain of the Halo: Reach Elite Spartan Squad – 17-year old Halo fan, Lewis Chapman. After fending off intense competition from the other finalists from the ‘Searching for a Leader’ promotion, which saw nearly 800 entrants, Lewis Chapman from Newark in Nottinghamshire, has been crowned Captain of the celebrity Elite Spartan Squad. Team members include, R’n’B / pop artist Mr Hudson, England and Manchester United footballer extraordinaire, Rio Ferdinand; Model and T4 presenter, Jameela Jamil; England Rugby star, Ben Cohen; and Gadget Show presenter, Jason Bradbury.

These are in no specific order but just as they shoot into my mind, so lets get started.

Game Number 1:

Tomcat Alley – this was one of the better Sega MegaCD titles, I had both MegaCD’s and thought that it was a great edition to the Sega Megadrive the intro was nearly 5 minutes long and made for a great game, especially considering the Playstation and XBOX consoles weren’t released at this point. The game took place in a full screen, full motion video, first-person perspective, and the player had to move quickly to launch missiles at enemy aircraft. It’s like HAWX but before HAWX was thought of….

The storyline was rather simple, you play as a Navy Pilot who had to bring peace and stability to the world after the cash-poor former Soviet Union sold off some of its military equipment to an unfriendly government.

Game Number 2:

The next classic game is one that has been released a few times but I feel needs some next-gen console boost and it is….ROBOCOP!

The game has been on many platforms from ZX Spectrum to PC and with the films being redone this would be great. The films were original set for tis year but appears to have been put back to 2013. Aslong as it stays away from looking too much like APB or Crackdown 2. I am not sure how the game would work but I only write about them not design them however this is what I would like to see in a RoboCop game.

I would love to see players fight crime in a similar pattern to APB you are either a cop or the bad guys but with the chance to switch sides, almost like the Paragon and Renegade actions of Mass Effect 2. Could you imagine if RoboCop turned bad guy for a change fighting against the law abiding RoboCops. I am sure things like this would hit off great especially as the films are being remade to an audience who is new to all things “Murphy”.  The films were a great success in the late 80′s which even made it to the small screen with RoboCop TV Show. The last game release for RoboCop was in 2002 on the XBOX/PS2/GBA/GC but in all honesty, it didn’t look that great and didn’t hit it off with sales that good neither. RoboCop has been seen on the following over the years:
